Radiator repair on the Gold Coast
OVERHEATING AND RADIATOR REPAIR
If your car is overheating, leaking coolant or leaving puddles under the front of the vehicle, the radiator could be the problem. Coastwide Service Centre can check the cooling system, find the leak and let you know if radiator repair or replacement is the better option.
Radiator issues are worth sorting early. A small coolant leak can turn into an overheating engine, and overheating can cause far more expensive damage if it is ignored.
We help with radiator repair, coolant leaks, overheating issues and cooling system checks for cars, utes, 4WDs, vans and light commercial vehicles across the Gold Coast.
Radiator repair and cooling system checks
Your radiator helps keep the engine at the right temperature. It moves heat away from the engine through the coolant system. When the radiator, hoses, cap, thermostat, water pump or coolant level is not right, the engine can start running hot.
Not every overheating issue is caused by the radiator itself. That is why it is important to check the full cooling system before replacing parts. A leak could be coming from a hose, radiator tank, radiator core, water pump, heater hose or loose clamp.

Signs your radiator may need repair
Your temperature gauge is rising
If the temperature gauge is sitting higher than normal, the cooling system needs to be checked. Do not keep driving if the car is overheating.
You can see coolant leaking
Coolant is often green, red, pink, orange or blue depending on the type used. If you notice coloured fluid under the car, book a check before the leak gets worse.
There is steam from the bonnet
Steam can mean the engine is overheating or coolant is escaping onto hot parts. Pull over safely and let the car cool down before opening anything.
The coolant keeps dropping
If you keep topping up coolant, there is usually a leak somewhere. It may be small, but it should not be ignored.
You can smell coolant
A sweet smell around the engine bay can be a sign of a coolant leak. It may come from the radiator, hoses or another cooling system part.
Not all engine problems are caused by the cooling system. Diesel vehicles can also develop injector faults, fuel system issues and other problems that may lead to warning lights, poor performance or increased fuel consumption. Read our guide on diesel engine problems that are expensive to ignore to learn what to watch for.
Can a radiator be repaired?
Sometimes, yes. A damaged radiator can sometimes be repaired if the leak is small and the radiator is still in good condition. Small leaks, loose fittings, hose issues or minor damage may be repairable.
If the radiator is badly corroded, cracked, blocked or leaking from the plastic tanks, replacement is usually the better option. Trying to patch a badly damaged radiator often only delays the problem.
Radiator replacement
If the radiator cannot be repaired properly, replacement is usually the safest option. A new radiator helps the cooling system work as it should and lowers the risk of overheating.
When replacing a radiator, it is also worth checking nearby parts such as hoses, clamps, thermostat, radiator cap, coolant condition and water pump. Replacing the radiator without checking the rest of the system can mean the same problem comes back.

Coolant leaks should not be ignored
A coolant leak can look harmless at first, but it can leave the engine without enough coolant. Once that happens, the engine can overheat quickly.
Driving with low coolant can damage the head gasket, cylinder head, radiator, hoses and other parts of the engine. If your car is leaking coolant, it is better to get it checked before taking it on a long drive.
If warning lights are showing on the dash, our check engine light diagnostics service may also help find related faults.
Radiator repair for used car buyers
Cooling system issues are common in used cars. A car may look fine on a short test drive but still have a small coolant leak, weak radiator cap, blocked radiator or overheating issue.
If you are buying a used vehicle, a pre-purchase car inspection can help pick up radiator problems before you commit.
Radiator repair FAQs
Can a damaged radiator be repaired?
Sometimes. A small leak or minor damage may be repairable if the radiator is still in good condition. If the radiator is badly cracked, corroded, blocked or leaking from the tanks, replacement is usually the better option.
Is it worth repairing a car radiator?
It depends on the damage. Repair can be worth it for a small issue on a radiator that is otherwise healthy. If the radiator is old, weak or badly damaged, replacing it is usually more reliable.
Can you fix a radiator by yourself?
You may be able to top up coolant or spot a visible leak, but proper radiator repair is better left to a mechanic. The cooling system runs under pressure, and a poor repair can lead to overheating.
Can you patch up a hole in a radiator?
A small hole may sometimes be patched, but it is not always a long-term fix. If the radiator is weak or corroded, patching one spot may not stop future leaks.
What is the most common place for a radiator leak?
Common leak points include radiator hoses, hose clamps, the radiator tank, the radiator core, the radiator cap area and the water pump. A pressure test can help find the exact source.
Can I drive 2 hours with a coolant leak?
It is not a good idea. A coolant leak can get worse while driving, and the engine can overheat quickly. If coolant is leaking, get the car checked before a long trip.
When replacing a radiator, what else should be replaced?
It depends on the vehicle, but it is worth checking the radiator cap, coolant, hoses, clamps, thermostat and water pump. Any weak parts should be replaced while the system is being repaired.
